WHAT IS GATE?
The National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India administers and conducts the all-India Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institutes of Technology.
WHY GATE?
GATE, being the standard examination, not only facilitates post-graduation admissions but also serves as a gateway to numerous opportunities in public sector enterprises and research organizations. It enables admissions in esteemed institutions like IITs, IISc, and NITs, and provides abundant opportunities for campus placements with attractive salary packages.
IMPORTANT OF GATE EXAM:
M.Tech graduates have opportunities for campus placements in both national and international private or public companies.
GATE Score is the basis for recruitment in several renowned PSUs and research organizations such as IOCL, NTPC, ONGC, and BARC.
Teaching positions like Professor and Assistant Professor are available at prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, and other reputed educational institutes.
Junior Research Fellow positions can be pursued at ISRO, DRDO, BARC, IITs, and CSIR Labs. Opportunities as Junior Research Associates or Senior Project Associates exist.
Job opportunities for Scientist "C" grade roles are available.
A career in Research and Development is also a viable option.
ELIGIBILITY:
The GATE exam eligibility criteria include the following:
Candidates who hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture (4 years after 10+2) or are currently in the final year of such a program.
Candidates who hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture (Post-B.Sc./Post-Diploma) or are in the final year of such programs.
Candidates who hold a Master's degree (M.Sc.) in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent, and those in the final year of such programs.
Candidates in the second year or higher of a Four-year Integrated Master's degree program (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology.
Candidates in the fourth year or higher of a Five-year integrated Master's degree program or Dual Degree program in Engineering/Technology.
Candidates who are in the third year or higher of an undergraduate degree program or those who are currently in the first year or higher, or have already completed a Master's degree in any relevant science subject.

QUESTION PATTERN
In the GA section, there are 5 questions carrying 1 mark each and 5 questions carrying 2 marks each, totaling 15 marks. For the compulsory Chemistry section, there are 9 questions carrying 1 mark each and 8 questions carrying 2 marks each, totaling 25 marks. Candidates can choose and answer only two optional sections at a time. Each optional section in the XL paper (Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Food Technology) consists of 19 questions, with a total of 30 marks. This includes 8 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total of 8 marks) and 11 questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total of 22 marks).
NEGATIVE MARKING
Negative marking is applicable for incorrect answers in multiple-choice questions (MCQs). In the case of 1-mark MCQs, 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Similarly, for 2-mark MCQs, 2/3 mark will be deducted for each incorrect response.
